Sin and Punishment combines automatic movement with direct control over a fighter who must survive attacks from every direction. The route through each section is predetermined, but players can move sideways, jump, roll, aim, and choose how to attack. Continuous enemy waves, environmental obstacles, score targets, and timed boss battles define the main gameplay loop.
A worldwide food shortage causes scientists to produce artificial creatures that later mutate into hostile Ruffians. The Armed Volunteers attempt to control the situation while using violence against civilians. Saki Amamiya and Airan Jo fight both forces as members of a resistance organized by Achi. As the conflict continues, Saki develops a connection to the Ruffians, and Achi’s actual purpose becomes central to the story.
The reticle can operate in lock-on or manual mode. Lock-on follows visible targets and helps manage groups, while free aiming requires greater precision but increases shot power. The adventure is arranged as a prologue and three main stages divided into smaller sections. These subdivisions are also described as ten individual levels. The route includes city streets, water-based sequences, aerial combat, military facilities, and battles against large Ruffians or machines. Easy, Normal, and Hard settings alter enemy pressure, while the higher difficulties introduce additional opponents and bosses.
During play, prioritize survival when the screen fills with projectiles, then attack when a safe opening appears. Use automatic targeting for enemies that move quickly across the background, but change to manual aiming when fighting durable targets. The sword is useful for close-range protection and can turn enemy ammunition into an offensive tool. Collect items that restore health, add time, or increase the score. Long hit chains provide score bonuses, while defeating groups without taking damage helps maintain the current total. The timer continues during each section, so remaining stationary and avoiding all risks is not a complete strategy. In cooperative play, one participant controls movement while the other manages the reticle and weapons.
