Project C.A.R.L is a physics-based sandbox game where players investigate how a simulated human body responds to weapons, falls, and environmental collisions. The main subject is Carl, whose name stands for Clinical Assistant for Research and Learning. His body contains simulated bones, organs, and blood vessels that react to different types of damage. Rather than completing a storyline or following predefined missions, players create their own experiments, change their conditions, and examine the results.
The simulation calculates how Carl reacts when struck by projectiles, moved through the environment, or dropped from different heights. His skeleton and internal systems influence the resulting movements and injuries. Blood effects include sprays, splatters, and pooling. Players can repeat an experiment with another weapon or change the point of impact to observe different outcomes. The physics gun provides additional control over Carl’s position and allows interactions that do not involve shooting.
The game includes two environments designed for different types of experiments. The Lab provides a contained testing space, while the Vertical Impact Test Site features elevated structures and a drop reaching 16 meters.
Available gameplay features include:
Players begin by selecting a testing location and choosing equipment. They can position Carl, interact with objects, fire weapons, or use environmental structures to create different situations. Changing the equipment or repeating an experiment from another position makes it possible to compare results. In Zombie Mode, the focus shifts toward surviving waves of enemies using firearms.
Project C.A.R.L does not contain numbered levels, experience points, or a completed campaign. The sandbox provides unrestricted experimentation, while the survival mode introduces successive enemy waves. Players determine their own objectives in the testing environments and can restart scenarios to investigate different interactions. Progress comes from exploring the available physics systems rather than unlocking a sequence of story missions.
