Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are open-world role-playing games developed by Game Freak for the Nintendo Switch. The games take place in the Paldea region, which is inspired by the Iberian Peninsula and structured around free exploration rather than a fixed linear route. Players attend an academy while traveling across the region, catching Pokémon, completing storylines, and challenging trainers across multiple locations. The games introduced the ninth generation of Pokémon and expanded the series with a fully connected open world.
Unlike earlier entries in the Pokémon series, the world in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can be explored in almost any direction from the beginning. Urban areas, mountains, lakes, deserts, and wilderness zones are connected without loading transitions. Players travel using the Legendary Pokémon Koraidon or Miraidon, which gain traversal abilities such as climbing, swimming, and gliding as progression continues.
The game structure is divided into three major story paths: Victory Road, Path of Legends, and Starfall Street. Each route focuses on different objectives, including Gym battles, Titan Pokémon encounters, and confrontations with Team Star. These paths can be completed in varying order before converging into a final storyline connected to Area Zero. The battle system remains turn-based while introducing the Terastal mechanic, which changes a Pokémon’s type and battle properties during combat.
The game includes rivals and companions such as Nemona, Arven, and Penny, each connected to one of the main story routes. The academy setting introduces optional classes and side activities that expand the world structure beyond standard Gym progression. Wild Pokémon appear directly in the environment, allowing encounters to begin seamlessly during exploration.
Replayability comes from team customization, open exploration, multiplayer activities, and post-game content. DLC expansions added additional regions, Pokémon, and story chapters connected to the Hidden Treasure of Area Zero storyline. The games received praise for their open-world direction and narrative structure, although technical performance and graphical issues were frequently criticized after release.
