Cry of Fear is a first-person psychological horror game that combines survival mechanics, exploration, puzzle solving, and combat inside a dark urban environment. The story follows Simon Henriksson, a teenager who wakes up alone in a deserted city after a serious accident. While searching for a way home, Simon encounters distorted creatures, abandoned streets, and disturbing hallucinations connected to his mental condition. The game focuses heavily on isolation, psychological trauma, and survival under constant pressure.

Exploring the Nightmare City

The gameplay takes place across streets, apartment buildings, forests, subway tunnels, hospitals, and underground facilities inspired by Stockholm. Players move through dangerous environments while solving puzzles and searching for keys, weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies. Many locations change unexpectedly during progression, turning ordinary buildings into nightmare versions filled with monsters and disturbing visual effects.

The game is divided into chapters with different objectives and environments. Early chapters focus on survival and exploration, while later sections introduce stronger enemies, complex puzzles, and larger combat encounters. Simon carries a limited inventory with only six item slots, forcing players to choose carefully between weapons, healing items, keys, and light sources. Some sections also require using both hands strategically because Simon can carry a weapon and flashlight at the same time.

Survival Horror and Combat Systems

One of the central mechanics in Cry of Fear is resource management. Ammunition and healing items are limited, making every encounter risky. Players must decide whether to fight enemies directly or avoid combat whenever possible. Different monsters move unpredictably and attack quickly, especially inside dark hallways and confined spaces.

Main gameplay activities include:

  • exploring abandoned city environments
  • solving environmental puzzles
  • managing limited inventory space
  • fighting monsters with firearms and melee weapons
  • collecting keys, notes, and medical supplies
  • unlocking multiple endings through choices

Story Progression and Multiple Endings

As the story continues, Simon’s journey becomes increasingly connected to psychological themes and distorted memories. Several choices throughout the game influence the ending and determine how Simon’s mental state develops by the conclusion of the story. Some endings reveal hidden details about the accident and Simon’s condition, while others lead to darker outcomes connected to isolation and trauma.

The game also includes a separate cooperative campaign where players control police officers trapped inside the same nightmare world. In addition, survival modes and unlockable content become available after finishing the main campaign.
