NBA 2K27 is a basketball simulation built around several separate ways to play rather than one fixed campaign. A player can develop a custom athlete, manage an NBA or WNBA organization, assemble a card-based roster, or compete online in The City. This edition also expands who can be created in MyPLAYER, including female players, and adds historical career paths that allow MyCAREER to begin in different eras of NBA history.
A Career Can Begin Decades Before the Present
MyCAREER now offers five historical starting periods, beginning with the Magic vs. Bird Era in 1984 and continuing through later eras such as the Steph Era in 2016. Players can also follow the modern Fire & Concrete storyline, an 11-chapter campaign featuring Vince Staples. A new Running Mate system adds co-op support by allowing another person to control teammate Trace Miller inside the same career.

Defense Receives as Much Attention as Scoring
NBA 2K27 keeps the familiar controls for passing, shooting, dribbling, rebounding, and defending, but several systems have been rebuilt. The Dynamic Dunk Meter evaluates defensive pressure throughout the entire attempt, while the Dynamic Layup Engine changes finishing around the basket. Defense includes redesigned hands-up contests, additional cutoff interactions, revised shot contests, and a new collision system. ProPLAY contributes more than 7,000 new animations taken from real NBA footage.
Franchise Play Can Continue for Generations
MyNBA is structured around management rather than character leveling. Players control rosters, contracts, trades, league settings, and modern CBA rules, with franchise saves able to continue for up to 100 years. MyNBA Legacy provides a different setup by locking the user to one legend on the court while still allowing control over front-office decisions, combining individual basketball performance with long-term franchise development.
There are no universal numbered levels because progression depends on the chosen mode. MyCAREER develops one athlete through attributes, badges, games, and story chapters, while MyTEAM revolves around cards and Player XP. The W uses a Build-as-You-Go progression system with Team and Teammate Badges, while franchise modes focus on seasons, roster decisions, and organizational development. NBA 2K27 therefore lets the player approach basketball as an athlete, coach, general manager, collector, or online competitor rather than following one shared progression path.
