Meikyuu Kumikyoku is the Japanese title of Milon’s Secret Castle, an action adventure puzzle game developed and published by Hudson Soft for the Famicom in 1986. The game follows Milon, a boy who enters Castle Garland to rescue Queen Eliza. The story uses music as an important theme, because people in Milon’s world communicate through musical tones, while Milon cannot understand them in the same way.
The game takes place inside a large castle with connected rooms, locked areas, secret passages, and boss fights. The player controls Milon as he explores the castle, shoots bubbles, jumps across platforms, and searches for hidden items. Many important objects are not shown openly, so the player has to shoot walls, blocks, and suspicious spaces to discover doors, shops, and useful upgrades.
Meikyuu Kumikyoku does not use simple stage by stage levels. The castle is divided into floors and rooms, and the player reaches new parts of the building by finding secrets and defeating bosses. Each floor has its own boss, and later areas become available after the player clears earlier sections. This makes the game closer to an early action adventure than a straight platformer.
The game includes these main elements:
Exploring Castle Garland room by room
Shooting bubbles at enemies and walls
Finding hidden doors and secret shops
Collecting money and useful items
Defeating bosses to open higher floors
Using upgrades to reach new areas
The player moves Milon left and right, jumps, and fires bubbles to attack enemies or reveal hidden objects. Money collected from defeated enemies or discovered areas can be used in shops. Items can improve Milon’s abilities, such as movement, defense, or access to new places. Because the game gives limited direct guidance, the player has to experiment with the environment and remember where secrets are located.
Progression depends on exploration, item collection, and survival. The game is known for being difficult because many secrets are hidden, and the player can miss important items needed to continue. There is no modern quest marker system, no open map with instructions, and no long dialogue system explaining every step. The goal is to understand the castle layout, defeat enemies, find required upgrades, and reach the final rescue.
Meikyuu Kumikyoku is mainly for players who like older action adventure games with hidden mechanics and puzzle based exploration. It is not a fast arcade game with separate short stages. The main challenge is learning how the castle works, discovering hidden routes, and using collected items to move deeper into the game.
