A hacking competition ends with an unexpected result in ERROR143: the protagonist loses to Micah Yujin, a talented programmer who soon becomes their romantic interest. Refusing to accept second place, the protagonist breaks into Micah’s computer and leaves a message. However, Micah quickly responds by hacking them back. This exchange begins a series of conversations in which the two characters compete, exchange jokes, and gradually learn more about each other. The game is an interactive romance visual novel where dialogue choices determine how the relationship develops.
Much of the story takes place through a simulated computer interface. Players communicate with Micah through messages and video calls, choosing how to respond to his teasing and questions. Some answers encourage flirting, while others create distance between the characters. Micah’s reactions reveal information about his personality and feelings. The narrative progresses through conversations rather than exploration or combat.
ERROR143 includes interactive elements that make the computer interface part of the gameplay. Players can investigate different applications, complete hacking challenges, and discover optional content.
The main features include:
The original storyline includes a standard ending, an unfavorable ending, and a secret proposal ending. Certain dialogue responses affect the outcome, while a specific hacking interaction can unlock the proposal route. Additional story chapters expand the relationship beyond the original narrative.
Players use the mouse to select dialogue options, navigate computer windows, and interact with interface elements. Keyboard input is required during password challenges. ERROR143 does not have numbered levels, battles, or an experience system. Progression follows story days and conversations, with decisions determining which scenes and outcomes players encounter. Replaying the story with different responses allows players to explore alternative interactions and discover endings they previously missed.
