Bendy and the Brine Barrel transforms a well-known horror setting into something entirely absurd. The game opens with Brine Bendy — a green, bitten pickle version of Bendy — sealed inside a large brine jar alongside other odd characters. These include references to previous figures like Boris and The Meatly, but reimagined in vegetable form. Pickled Boris lies halved on a table, mirroring a scene from the original game, while Pickled Meatly appears tucked away in a hidden location. Despite the visual humor, the game follows a basic structure with exploration and one major threat.
While early parts of the game may feel lighthearted, the final sequence introduces a serious obstacle — the Pickle Demon. Once triggered, it begins a chase that determines which of the four endings you’ll receive. Failing to escape results in the Pickled ending, while running back to the barrel and touching it unlocks the Cheese ending. Players who exit immediately are labeled Cowards, and those who escape fully receive the Escaped result. The game builds all tension into this single moment, requiring quick reaction and knowledge of the layout to succeed.
Much of the original dialogue has been altered or stripped down. One character’s tape recording is now just an extended repetition of the word “pickle,” and every piece of in-game writing is replaced with Japanese text that translates to the same word. This repetition reinforces the bizarre theme without explanation. Bendy and the Brine Barrel doesn’t focus on puzzles or combat — instead, it uses minimalism and parody to create a surreal spin-off that plays with player expectations while staying self-aware from start to finish.
